Classify the origin before using the 180-day rule
Japan separates designated and non-designated regions. The continental United States follows the non-designated-region route, while Hawaii and Guam follow a different branch. Record where the pet has lived, every transit point, and the planned port before calculating dates.
Protect the microchip and vaccination order
The identification and rabies sequence must be documented in the order required by Japan AQS. Have the veterinarian scan the chip, reconcile the number across every record, and preserve the dates and validity periods for both qualifying rabies vaccinations.
Use blood sampling as the waiting-period anchor
For this route, the 180-day wait is counted from the rabies-antibody blood-sampling date, not from the vaccination date or the date the laboratory reports the result. Use an AQS-designated laboratory and preserve the original result showing the qualifying titer.
Do not schedule arrival before the dependency closes
A pet arriving before the full wait is complete may be detained for the remaining period. Put the sampling date, day 180, proposed arrival, vaccination-expiry dates, notification deadline, and certificate work on one calendar, then have the accredited veterinarian verify it.
